Ah Maserati, the other Italian sportscar. With Ferrari/Fiat/Alfa (all one company) dominating the field and Lamborghini still just making tractors there was really only one competitor if you didn't like Enzo Ferrari's product and Maserati was it.
Started in the 1920's as a race car, by the 50's they produced cars for both track and street (often the same car) and with their partnership with the stylish PininFarina coachworks to build their bodies, Maserati's cars were sleek and fast and usually ahead of the curve design and mechanics wise.
And this is one of the early sweethearts. With a body sculpted by the aforementioned PininFarina and an engine designed by a former Ferrari chief mechanic this little car could hit top speeds of 120 mph with its 125 horse 121 cubic inch inline 6 engine mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox.
The great Fangio won the Argentine Grand Prix in an A6G variant in 1954. What more can be said about a superb car?
